The Commitment That Changes Teams

Commit to giving your best. That is all your team asks. And it is what they deserve.

As we push forward after Labor Day and into the fall season, I am reminded of all my days playing and coaching football. This includes raising my kids in sports, coaching them, and building teams in the workplace.

I continue preparing for an upcoming presentation built around Jon Gordon’s book, The 7 Commitments of a Great Team. I am excited about this far beyond the opportunity itself. I am excited because of the impact I believe the message and stories have.

When you break it down, committing to give your best is a huge commitment. It means each day you prepare yourself for meetings, projects, and activities. It means following your H3 Formula of Health, Heart, and Habits.

When your team is counting on you to be your best, you feel that emotional connection to them. You want to live up to their expectations.

Yet sometimes we are tired. Sometimes we are upset. Sometimes we just want a break.

It is crucial to know that if your tank is only half full, you still need to give 100% of the 50% you have. That is still giving your best in that moment.

But now you must take responsibility to get your tank full for the next day.

You need to:

  1. Hydrate
  2. Get nutrition
  3. Exercise or move
  4. Rest and recover
  5. Sleep to recharge

These are key components. And remember, devotion drives discipline.

Here is the equation:

Devotion + Care More + Effort + Discipline + Consistency = Giving Your Best

When we are devoted to something, we give all we have because we care more about the team and the mission. That devotion increases our effort. It strengthens our discipline to care for ourselves so we can show up consistently and continue giving our best.

Some of the best teams I have been part of in sports and work exude these characteristics. Their devotion to the mission is obvious. Their effort is visible. Their discipline is steady. Their consistency is reliable.

As we turn the corner to fall, I encourage you to perform a temperature check on your team. Find out what each person needs to give their best.

We all need a jump start occasionally or a refresher. If that is where you are, let me know. I am always ready to help.

Commit to giving your best.
