So, your company’s vision or project clarity is… well, as clear as mud.
I’ve been there. It’s a special kind of chaos — too many people in the room, half of them unsure why they’re even there, and a leader proudly announcing they’re “including everyone.” Meanwhile, no one actually knows what’s going on or what they’re supposed to do.
On a recent trip to Texas, where I was speaking on culture and leadership, I couldn’t help overhearing conversations in airports — people talking to coworkers, clients, or whoever was unlucky enough to sit next to them. The amount of uncertainty and ambiguity people are operating in was unbelievable. These weren’t folks from my field. They were random travelers. But you didn’t need a degree in organizational psychology to hear the frustration.
What made it worse was the tone — irritation, confusion, and plenty of negative commentary about leadership. And these people were traveling for work. To meet clients. To run projects. To build relationships. I’m sure they were all in their best frame of mind too. (That was a joke.)
What I was hearing was classic VUCA — Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. And no team can thrive in that environment. It drains energy, kills momentum, and prevents people from doing their best work.
Culture is everything around us. It never sleeps. And as leaders, we’re responsible for shaping it. Whether you’re kicking off a project or casting a company-wide vision, clarity isn’t optional — it’s leadership.
Here are six questions every leader should answer up front:
- Where are we going or what are we doing — and why?
- Who needs to be involved?
- How will this impact our operation?
- What does “done” look like?
- What’s the budget?
- How will we share the story?
These aren’t complicated, but they’re powerful. They give your team direction, purpose, alignment, and a shared language. Everyone should know what the initiative is, why it matters, and how to talk about it.
Eliminate the VUCA. Establish direction. Provide clarity. You’ll create a happier, more positive, more productive environment — and you’ll stop wondering what your team is saying about leadership in airport terminals across the country.
You don’t have to figure this out alone. I’m here to help. Check out the website http://www.jasonchadock.com and reach out if you’re ready to eliminate the VUCA environment and lead with clarity.
