Right now, this is certainly a topic everyone in society can relate to. Every one of us is living, enduring, coping, or fearfully walking with change. For some, change is welcomed and enjoyed as they see the progress and advancement opportunities available. For others change can spark fear, mean loss, or take them completely out of their comfort zone. No matter what, tomorrow will be different than yesterday.
Last week I heard a great analysis from Rachel Hollis on her Rise Podcast, she explained how we normally operate with a plan for the future and that helps not only guide us, it also provides comfort with change. These days we do not have the plan, we are literally learning day by day as we don’t know how the standards will change tomorrow. She closed with this; even when we have a plan, we never know what the future holds as tomorrow is always unknown. In other words, we need to work hard at not letting our fear consume us.
Fear of change can wear on us and cause unneeded stress. In order to combat fear of change we must open our minds to the possibilities ahead. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to help open channels of communication and pave the way to the opportunities that exist. We must help those that are struggling with change by these simple steps:
- Talk about future early and often
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Discuss concerns and answer questions
- Most importantly, explain the WHY
Now, more than ever before, we need to provide a high level of leadership and drive people through their fears and to the development of the team and operation. Maintaining motivation, productivity, and teamwork is the key. Be honest, be open, and be available to help!
