We live in a fast pace society and for some, the speed at which we move has now doubled amidst a worldwide pandemic. Many articles out there suggest this is a time to pause, reflect, and catch up. Unfortunately, not everyone has that luxury pending their job or organization they work for. Last week I myself experienced and watched others hit burnout.
Burnout is a stage of emotional, physical. and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. This occurs when someone feels overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands and or change. Many of you are thinking same as me, this sounds like every week, or in some cases, day, within the current state of living. We cannot keep this pace or depth of work and planning without putting undeniable boundaries in place.
We believe in a strong, mission driven motto: 247 Performance Development. Many think this is attributed only to sports, simply not true. We are not capable of showing up for others the way we want, and they need unless we first care for ourselves. Key components to self-care and restoring energy levels include:
- Exercise – increased heart rate and caloric burn for full effect.
- Sleep – amount you need to feel energized. Many specialists say 6-8 hours a night, everyone is different, if 5 works for you, be you!
- Healthy Eating – yes have a cheat day/meal and other days stay away from junk and focus on nutritional foods that build your energy reserves and replenish you.
- Me Time – you must have relaxation that doesn’t involve work to recharge your mind, body, and spirit. Reading, meditation, tv, or games.
Self-care is an underrated difference maker. You are a finely tuned race car and it takes all parts working in unison to be fully functioning, serve others, and successfully complete tasks. I’m not encouraging you; I’m TELLING YOU to be the leader you want to be and show up the way you want to, self-care isn’t an option, it’s a MUST!
Over the last two weeks while my exercise was on point, my me time was not, and I got burnt out on a Monday after 11.5-hour day. Quickly realizing I needed action to secure a strong rest of the week. It was in that moment I knew my mind needed calmed. I took some needed down time and stopped thinking and let my mind ease into a comfortable place.
