A decade ago I was coming off a long lay-off from work, had just found a new position, and had two little kids. In this ten-year period, we moved from Colorado to Texas and then back to Colorado, watched our children grow academically and athletically, and we have grown our marriage and professional careers while doing a much better job of creating family time. It amazes me looking back and seeing all that we’ve been through and in some cases, it feels like yesterday.
We just closed out an amazing family Christmas vacation in Kauai. It was great to unplug from everything and simply focus on family and maximizing our experience together. The smiling faces from our kids, the food, and the adventures are priceless. One thing we learned in this experience is that our kids are getting older and before you know it, they’ll be leaving for college. We discussed the need to plan more vacations or long weekend get-a-ways so we can enjoy this family time. As a society we are always working, emailing, texting, and not spending enough family time, we all need to work towards better integration of family into all this.
I’m not into new years resolutions and categorically listing goals, what I am into is picking one word that drives me for the year. I picked this up years ago from Jon Gordon and have used it ever since. Last year my word was Faith, this year it’s Focus.
Focus will drive my 2020 vision and keep me in tune to serve, be disciplined, and be a leader. We have such competing interests all the time and its easy to lose focus in what we are doing. To find success, focus is needed. To serve others, focus is needed. To be all you can be, focus is needed. To find direction, focus is needed. I’m excited for this focus and looking forward to where it leads me, my family, and those I serve in 2020.
A valuable lesson I’ve learned over the last ten years is accepting coaching and mentorship takes courage. Some may laugh hearing this, think about it like this, you literally must humble yourself and believe that someone else can help make you a better version of you. Someone can teach you, build you, and serve you. This is a huge step to take on your journey to leadership and maximizing your 2020 vision.
