While working out last week, someone at the gym brought up something that stopped me in my tracks: Perseverance.
It came up after they asked about my work in speaking, training, and performance coaching. This person said, “You know what’s missing in society today? Perseverance.”
Let’s define it clearly: Perseverance is continued effort to achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. It’s what allows us to overcome adversity—and it’s non-negotiable if you want to achieve anything worthwhile.
This gym conversation turned into a powerful reflection on what’s happening in our workplaces right now. My friend shared a frustration: “People give up too easily, especially when something doesn’t go their way.” They even questioned whether a co-worker was truly dedicated, saying, “If my co-worker was passionate about this project, they would’ve fought for it instead of making a half-hearted case and walking away.”
I understood immediately. I’ve been there before—with teammates who want an easy road and expect instant empowerment. The reality is, empowerment comes from trust—and trust is built over time, not overnight.
We’re living in an instant society: instant oatmeal, microwave meals, coffee at the touch of a button, endless information from our phones. But in real life and high-performance teams, there are no shortcuts.
Here are Four Keys that every strong team—and every real leader—must live by:
- Standard: Set and know the bar. Define the values and expectations that drive your team.
- Commitment: Go all-in. Don’t just agree—align.
- Discipline: Do the hard things, especially when you don’t feel like it.
- Consistency: Show up, every single day, regardless of circumstance.
Perseverance is the cumulative effect of these keys in action. It’s not a one-time decision—it’s demonstrated through day-in, day-out consistency and preparedness, despite adversity.
But here’s the secret: you can’t build true discipline until you’re committed to something greater than yourself—and you can’t commit unless you understand and accept the standard.
When you know the standard, you know what the organization values, and you have a choice: align or leave. It may sound harsh, but why work somewhere you don’t believe in?
Building united teams isn’t about slogans or speeches. It’s about a shared vision that defines your standard, unwavering commitment to that vision, disciplined daily behaviors, and the consistency to stick with it. That’s how trust and empowerment are built—over time, together.
So ask yourself:
- Do you have the perseverance to build forward?
- Do you clearly understand and embrace the standard and organizational vision?
If so, respond “YES” below. If not, DM me and let’s build your organization forward, together.
