Why does it feel so much easier to celebrate and connect as a team during the holidays—only to lose that spark once the calendar turns?
Something about the holidays makes it easy to celebrate, connect, and show gratitude. But fast forward to January 5th—after we’ve traded stories about our vacations, caught up on gifts, and braved the winter weather—most teams snap right back to business as usual.
I’m guilty of it, too. In municipal work, planning is always months ahead, so it’s easy for the “holiday feels” to disappear in the rush toward spring programming and summer plans.
But here’s what I’ve learned: Culture never stops moving. If you’re not actively shaping it, negativity is happy to take over.
Let’s choose to do things differently. Building a great culture is about intentional, consistent action—even when it feels like there’s no time for celebration.
One year, I went all the way to April before a team member pointed out, “Jason, we haven’t had a team lunch since Christmas!” My response? Shock—and gratitude for the reminder. That moment showed me how easy it is to let culture slip when we get busy.
5 Keys to Keeping Team Culture Alive All Year
1️⃣ Celebrate Wins—Big & Small:
Make time in weekly or bi-weekly meetings to highlight accomplishments, progress, and positive feedback. Recognize both the big achievements and the everyday victories.
2️⃣ Make Connection a Habit:
Don’t wait for the calendar—schedule regular team lunches, coffee breaks, or (my favorite) ice cream parties. Consistent connection keeps momentum alive.
3️⃣ Manage Up:
Connect with leaders. Proactively share what’s working and where support could help the team thrive. Managing up isn’t just about advocating for yourself—it’s about offering ideas and feedback that can help leaders support you and the whole team even better.
4️⃣ Address Negativity Fast:
Tackle small issues before they grow, and look for ways to turn challenges into positive outcomes. The longer you wait, the harder it is to steer culture back on track.
5️⃣ Set the Tone:
Your attitude sets the emotional climate for your team. Demonstrate gratitude, look for wins, and show up with intention—others will follow your lead.
Culture is always evolving. Feed it with recognition, celebration, and positive energy, and it will grow strong. Want more strategies for building a thriving team? Subscribe to my weekly newsletter at www.jasonchadock.com
