Poetic sounding isn’t it? Well, sort of. As Jon Gordon always writes, fear and faith both believe in one thing, looking forward to a future that has yet to happen. I’ve read and listened to countless articles, books, and podcasts that all touch base on the legends of fear and faith.
As we stroll down the path of fear, we learn that it can be consuming, cause stress, and have unhealthy effects on the mind, spirit, and body. Fear is damaging and is a physical or emotional reaction caused by a belief that someone or something is going to cause harm or lead to unfavorable results. In today’s society, media outlets and social media work hard to create headlines that spark fear and get clicks. We’ve been experiencing this since March with the onset of COVID – 19. This is not to take away the seriousness of this virus, rather it’s to highlight how society so often drives fear and doesn’t focus enough on the faith of how we could highlight that many people have overcome this while also remembering and honoring those who did not. We can in fact do both.
Faith, in return, can have a strong belief in God or can have a strong confidence in something or someone. Faith is not a false naive confidence, rather it’s a true belief in something, someone, and the possibilities for the future. It takes strength, courage, and passion to move forward in this life with faith. It’s easy to let the negative of society bring you down, courage kicks in when you make the decision to overcome the obstacles, take calculated chances, and move towards something instead of away from.
As leaders we have a obligation to be agile in all that we do so we can meet the needs of business and people who count on us. We need a laser focus on development of staff and operations so we can be versatile and meet constantly changing demands. We must operate with a faith in the things we’ll learn together in this journey, not a fear of what we may mess up. Create a learning environment that encourages calculated risk taking and is comfortable with ideas that may not work because rest assured, we will fail in something at some point.
Live in faith, believe in what you are doing and put people around you that make the team better. Acknowledge there is often more than one way to do something. Now more than ever we need faith!
