What’s Your Why

In Simon Sinek’s book “Start With Why”, he references the key ingredient behind many successful businesses, is they knew their why and never sacrificed it. Whether their why was service, customer experience, creating needed equipment, or building something, they absolutely found success by knowing why they did what they did and how it affected others. Now, look at how we live our everyday lives. Do we truly think about our why? Do we develop a plan for meetings or practices knowing our why 24/7? What is the thought process that goes into this and have we gauged how it builds a team?

When you learn more about strong companies you discover they never sacrifice their beliefs even if it means a loss in revenue. If their why is to serve customers, they will make changes to provide better service even if it is at a larger expense. They work on creating the customer experience and a lifetime partnership. This is how you develop.

I hear from people all the time; I want to be the leader, manager, director, coach, or supervisor. This is great, I applaud when someone has the mindset of a leadership role. However, when I ask why, the separation begins. Many are focused on making the decisions, hiring, firing, and the many other duties associated with being a leader or boss. What I have learned over the years is simple, you are there to serve others and help them excel in their positions to improve the organization. Sure, occasionally as a leader I get to make some decisions and most of those decisions are one’s others don’t want to make. My impact as a leader is developing others. Whether it’s in my organizational leadership role, coaching, or performance coaching, I am here to develop people and help them accomplish their dreams. It’s about them, when they achieve, I feel the rush of energy and accomplishment.

As you venture down the leadership pathway or seek advancement at work, think about your why. If it centers around pay, that will make you happy in the interim until you begin living life to your new means. Money cannot be the driver. Do you wish to develop others, impact teams, create innovation or many of the other great things associated with leadership? You can achieve these dreams; it all starts with your why. Know why you want something, the impact you anticipate, and know that to fail is to learn.

Be bold, chase dreams, it’s important, and it is important for you to become the leader and influencer you desire to be. If you seek help in this journey, we are always here. Fill out the information form on the website and we’ll be in touch soon.
